Thoughts on: Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

Itโ€™s 4:36 AM when writing this. Iโ€™m wide awake after a night fu*ked up sleep. What better time to write about Why We Sleep?

This book is extremely comprehensive and will give you the full run down of how sleep is generated (absolutely fascinating!), dreams, why modernity promotes bad sleep and the terrible outcome of not getting enough sleep and, of course, the benefits of adequate shuteye.

๐Ÿ“ โ€œThe shorter your sleep the shorter your life span.โ€

๐Ÿ“ Lack of sleep makes you a baby: I donโ€™t take myself serious when Iโ€™m sleepy. Feelings go haywire, I worries unnecessary, my food choices sucks. Iโ€™ve learned to observe when this happen and try to get some sleep. I also avoid making any important decisions in this state.

๐Ÿ“ Most people donโ€™t know how long it takes to overcome a single dose of caffeine. Therefore a lot of people fail to link bad sleep with the cup of coffee they had 9 hours earlier. โ˜•๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ โ€œIf you donโ€™t sleep the very first night after learning you lose the chance to consolidate those memories; even if you get a lot of catch-up sleep thereafter.โ€

Sleep for memory consolidation is an all-or-nothing event!

โฐ Reasons for 8h Sleep:

– Live longer.

– Enhances memory.

– Makes you more creative.

– Makes you look more attractive.

– Keeps you slim and lowers food cravings.

– It protects you from cancer and dementia.

– It walls of colds & the flue.

– It lowers your risk of heart attacks and stroke and diabetes.

– Youโ€™ll feel happier and less depressed and less anxious.


  • No coffee after 1 PM. โ˜•๏ธ
  • Increasing my daily sleep from 7h to at least 7.5h (8h would be ideal but Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s feasible for me atm.)
  • Adjust time for mediation to early afternoon to avoid nodding off. Then the Circadian rythm is at its peak and Sleep Pressure should be low.

โš–๏ธ VERDICT:

This book is not a fun reading per se. It can get quite technical and i itโ€™s quite terrifying; but itโ€™s close to impossible not to change you lifestyle after reading it.

I donโ€™t think I have said this since reading Influence by Chaldini: This should be mandatory reading!

What is long and hard, and filled with baboon references? Robert Sapolskys book Behave.

๐Ÿ“ โ€œThe frontal cortex makes you do the harder thing, when itโ€™s the right thing to do.โ€ The frontal cortex consumes a lot of energy which makes your willpower limited. Have you noticed how quick you are to judge and how hard it is to be a good person you are when depleted after a hard day at work?

๐Ÿ“ Initially demanding frontal tasks, like controlling your bladder as a child, becomes easier with time. Understand: repeated good behaviors and they will become automatic!

๐Ÿ“ We Habituate..

Understand: Artificial pleasures (designer food, drugs, VR porn etc..) throws our systems of the scale making us unable to appreciate the natural.

๐Ÿ“ Humans delays gratification for an extremely long time. No other animal restricts calories now to look good on the beach next year! ๐Ÿ˜†

๐Ÿ“ โ€œThe opposite of love is not hate, its indifferenceโ€

๐Ÿ“ Win-Win solutions rewards more dopamine than Win – Lose ones. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ“ Alcohol = more aggressive behavior? No, alcoholic only evokes aggression in people prone to aggression AND people that BELIEVE that alcohol makes you more aggressive. Like testosterone only increase aggression in people prone to it in the first place. Testosterone will enhance any behavior that helps us maintain status.

โญ๏ธ TAKEAWAY: I was applying for days off at work. I was going to ask right before lunch, but caught myself and did it the proper way instead; Judges famously give harsher judgments when they are hungry. I upped my chances of getting an approved application quickly by waiting until after lunch.

This was not a matter of life or death situation, like the case with some trials, but I think this story points towards something worth thinking about.

What is the result of a lifetime of strategic moves based on the quirks of biology and human nature works compared to a life ignorant of these hidden influences?
