Thoughts on: โ€œIn the Realm of Hungry Ghostsโ€ by Gabor Matรฉ

Dr. Gabors is specialized in the study and treatment of addiction. His book offers portraits of his patient lives, stories about his own addictive behaviors, it examines the causes behind addiction and it breaks down the path to recovery.

โ€”โ€”

He opposes the weight thatโ€™s been put on the genetic component of addiction and points at stresses in early childhood (even pre-natal stresses) as the main risk factor. He is a big proponent of more compassion in societyโ€™s view of addicts and explains the futility of the โ€œwar on drugsโ€.

โ€”โ€”-

An excellent introduction to the complex problem of addiction!

โ€”โ€”-

๐Ÿ“ โ€œAs a rule, whatever we donโ€™t deal with in our lives we pass on to our childrenโ€ -Our unfinished emotional business becomes theirs.

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ Addiction = Fear of emptiness.

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ Proximal separation: Physically there but mentally absent when parenting. Children experiencing this look to use external couping mechanisms like thumb sucking or tuning out. These kids have great chances of seeking refuge in drugs later on in life.

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ Gabors recommends the teachings of Eckhart Tolle and the book Rosenbergโ€™s book โ€œNon-violent Communicationโ€ (I just got it!)

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ Circumstances for brain development differs. Some have had positive experiences that others have been deprived of. Think about this before you judge.

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ Parents, and mothers in particular, are getting less and less of the suppport they need during their childrenโ€™s early years. This is a cultural breakdown of cataclysmical scale. Therefore the raise in adhd.

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ โ€œAll problems are psychological, but all solutions are spiritualโ€

โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“ โ€œOnly healthy nurturing relationships with adults will prevent kids from getting lost in the peer world. A loss of orientation that leads rapidly to drug use.โ€

A reading update! All over the place as usual!

No book review this week due to stomach flue. ๐Ÿคฎ

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

But I thought I could share an update on whatโ€™s going into my mind these days!

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“– โ€œIn the Realm of Hungry Ghostsโ€ – Gabor Matรฉ, M.D.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

Absolutely brilliant book about addition. Dr. Matรฉ is sharing his experience working with addicts in Vancouver worst drug districts. His book provides us with a more sympathetic and informed view in addition. I canโ€™t put it down!

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“– โ€œMan and his Symbolsโ€ – Jung & Co.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

Less than 100 pages left. A truly great book, even though the part Iโ€™m at now, about modern art and symbolism has been quite a snooze.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“– โ€œTransurfingโ€ – Vadim Zeland

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

My antidote to the depressing feelings induced by Sebastian Jungers โ€œTribeโ€. Law of attraction and reality creation extravaganza. Itโ€™s โ€œout thereโ€, it kinda works, and itโ€™s fun! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

๐Ÿ“– โ€œThe Long Walk to Freedomโ€ – Nelson Mandela

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

I have a hard time getting into this one for some reason. I just seem to choose Gabor Matรฉโ€™s book over it every single time.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

Enough about me – What Iโ€™m really interested to hear is what you guys and gals are reading? ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿค”
